How to fix HTTP 500 - Internal server error?

I have a problem with my server when I try to view my asp pages it displays
HTTP 500 - Internal server error

I tried to turn off "show friendly HTTP error messages" and I got the following message:

    "Server Application Error
The server has encountered an error while loading an application during the processing of your request. Please refer to the event log for more detail information. Please contact the server administrator for assistance."

Would anyone please tell me how to solve it?
    Thank you!

can you post localstart.asp here for us to see if there's any errors there or resave it as localstart.txt and post the link to it.

    1) Make sure IIS is running.
    2) Make sure it has .asp pages supported.

I have heard of this problem when trying to run ASP.NET 1.0 pages on XP Professional. What it means is that there is no Root Application. To fix this you will need to delete your default site > uninstall IIS > install IIS.
