Awkward Computer Virus

Firstly, I apologize for having an off topic post, but I am in some urgent need.

Early today, my brother obtained a virus from (what he believes) MSN Messenger. The person he was talking to had the same problems, so it seems suitable to believe so.

The "symptoms" are as follows:

• When you try typing with the built in keyboard (it's a laptop), it does not type the correct characters. It appears like the virus (not sure if this is possible, but...) re-assigned the functions for the keys to be all gobbledy-gook. What's weird is that an external keyboard worked normal when we restarted, but the built-in still did not.
• The built in mouse is messed up as well. The mousepad really does not respond to the user's actions. When you try and move it, it will move for a while and then stop, like a wall is in the way or something. Like the keyboard, after restarting, the external mouse works fine.
• He also just complained that every time he turns it on it gives off some high pitched noises.

I attempted running a system restore, and tried running safe mode for a while but nothing helped. If anyone can help at all, it would be greatly appreciated. I'll have him bake you a nice big cake and send it to you (jk of course) but you'll feel all warm and cozy inside

Download "HiJackThis" and then post in a forum related to PC Security

the only solution I can think of is installing Anti Virus and running full system scan. there are millions of possible viruses. if you can't do that, I fear the computer is doomed and you'll be forced to Format it and re-install Windows.

and of course, be more careful in the future.

Oh well, it's my brother's laptop. He's a fool:P I'm smart enough to have an antivirus program on my computer. I just assumed someone had heard of a virus like this or something.

As a last resort, he may want to try to use System Restore.
How?
Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore.
Then choose a restore point to where he wasn't had any problems and restore to that. Hopefully that would do it otherwise, it would be easier to reinstall OS (not to mention less time consuming) rather than to try and find out what happened.

First thing I had him do...didn't work at first. But now, a day later, its running fine Interesting.

Maybe the laptop keyboard needed a good old smacking so the pins could be aligned properly

actually I discovered better and less brutal way to revive bad keyboard - spill coffee (black) over it and once it gets dry again, it's working like charm.
anyhow, you still better install antivirus and anti spam on his computer.
