Everyone wants to be a programmer, they want to be able to build cool data driven applications. But writing code is only a fraction of a true programmers skill.
If you want to be a good all-around programmer, then you need to do the following.

1) Get a solid understanding of software development and techniques.

2) Layout the systems structure before you write any code. (There's nothing worse then writing a few thousand lines of code, only to realize it needs to work completely differently then the way you programmed it)

3) LEARN TO DEBUG YOUR CODE!. I've seen programmers create some amazing applications, only to look completely dumbfounded when an error occurs...why? because they never learned how to debug or troubleshoot their code.

4) Database Design. Most if not all programmers will have some input, if not complete control of the database design. Knowing how to properly design a database is essential to any programmer/developer.

If you are interested in good software development techniques, then I strongly suggest you read the book "Code Complete" by Steve McConnell. It should be required reading for all programmers and developers.

Okay, I'm done ranting...you can go back to your bowl of Fruit Loops!

Good Rant,

I know too many developers who can code, but beyond that they are useless. Which makes my job harder becuase I have to fix the system to run right, which if they would have taken the time to do a good analysis in the first place.....

Exactly, being a programmer/developer is more than just having the ability to write code.
