De-Repping A Member
As most of you might know, I'm totally against de-repping members of this community unless it is completely neccessary, like in the instance of spamming or completely giving false or misleading information.
As for giving de-rep just for the sake of disagreeing that is totally out of order, it would'nt happen in the real world so why must it happen in here. I mean so in a real life situation somebody disagrees with you over a topic! What do you do - run up and chalk minus 5 on their back, hardly thinks so. Perhaps in the work related forums this is best applied but in the Lounge where people are BOUND to have differing concepts, naw I'm sorry this is not acceptable. C'mon admin get this prob sorted in the bud right now before a huge fallout takes place. For the record I do not wish positive repping be banned in the Lounge, only negative repping, as in the whole this does not contribute to a harmonius comminity. P.S. As when did a community only have positive things to say to each other, perhaps I have been over-keen in my assumption, as life does not always bear down on the positive. Perhaps Chief is right, Bollocks that'll be the day, this place is completely harmonious without our little grudges, its is one of - if not - the best online learning resources around. 1) Remember that the rep system is A GAME! It was created to be AMUSING, NOT to be taken SERIOUSLY. If you think that one $rep-- is going to turn the world upsidedown, I pray that you never set foot on the soil at DS, as you can get up to -65 rep simply because the girlfriend/wife of some heavy rep powered poster didn't want to have sex that night. (And even then that's assuming they're in a good mood. If they're in a bad mood they'll also call you some names that even Eminem wouldn't use.) The rep system is a toy, and it's hard to make it anything but that. A lot of people here use it in a positive, constructing manner, but that doesn't negate the fact that, in the end, it's not to be taken that seriously. "agreeing" with someone isn't the endorsing of a multi-million dollar contract between software giants or anything, it's just the simple espression of agreement/disagreement amongst members, in the same way you might nod/shake your head while talking with friend.
2) Besides, what's wrong with a little disagreement? Realistically, nobody agrees perfectly with another person, so why pretend that we do? A place where everbody just smiles and gets along perfectly has a phony feeling to it. Without conflict, there is no plot -- ask any movie/book producer. People will disagree with each other, and if nobodies allowed to express that, I mean, c'mon, gimme a break. Let people debate a little, and let them pinch each other a bit too. It builds character ( ). |

Quite. But, of course, you'd not hesitate to scribble a +10 on them.

I'm relatively rep free here, but I wouldn't mind going into the red as a social experiment

I have to agree with bcon on this, Paul - first and most
important of all, this whole reputation system is just a game - you're taking it way too personal, especially when the "darts" were aimed twice at other people. no two people share the same opinions, and the reputation system here allow us to publicly agree or disagree with our fellow members: this is not possible in the real world, it's only possible in the nice little virtual world we've created here. so please, let Chief express his opinions, he's member of this house and I'm sure he's not looking for fight or trouble. if you don't agree with what he does or says feel free to re-rep him, that's the purpose of the reputation system - but keep in mind that disagreeing with someone does not mean lack of respect. I'm sure Jon respect Doug as fellow moderator same way he respect Leuv as fellow member. so, for the sake of house peace, let's accept each others opinions, or at least learn to live with the different opinions. deal? ![]() |

When I first started at ASPFree I thought that the rep system
was a serious thing designed to encourage people to give complete and helpful answers. When I first went into the lounge, I learnt the error of my ways and that the rep system is a bit of fun designed to enourage debate without violence and name calling. While it is true that most of the repping in ASPFree is ++ it might not always be that way and I hope that when (not if) that happens, it doesn't upset too many people ![]() |
