Excel Help

I need a help with a project i am doing. I am doing a staff excel spreadsheet and i am
stuck on the salary bit of the spreadsheat. I want to auotmaticly come up with the salary for a certain posistion, like when he is a groundsman, he gets £18,000 a year and so on.

I have tried an IF function but that never works, perhaps because if have to much, so is there any other advice or a solution any one can giev me.
