I have the solution
Here's my thought and this is ignoring the differences between coding and scripting and programming...
Let's all assume that programming, scripting, and coding are the same thing. I think HTML Help, Programming Help, Web Layout, and Code Help all fall into the same major category which should be under the Programming heading. Web Layout does fall into this category if you think about it... SINCE there are differences in "programming" it should be split into two categories, Website Development and Software Development" Website Development includes: ASP, VBScript, XML, PHP, CSS, XHTML, HTML, JavaScript, Perl, CGI, .NET Layout Questions, theoretical questions, etc. Software Development includes: Visual Basic, Java, C++, Obj-C, C, Carbon, Cocoa, Lisp, etc. Two categories with more defined topics is the solution I think.

i like the ideas shamrog but the only problem is that if you go too specialised then you may as well just combine with DS as they have lots of areas for things. This forum imo needs to be kept primarily ASP/ASP.NET/VB/VB.NET. and then html goes with that. Obviously some programmers will hit other programming languages whilst using those which they need help with but not very much so those few questions that appear can go in a general programming area imo of course!!

shamrog, we have to keep in mind that 99% of the ppl who come to post here are in rush and won't stop to insepct every forum... they see the first forum which fit and post in there. so we better keep it simple and general, so that we won't have too small forums - having all "other" programming problems (i.e. not ASP, HTML, VB, Access, IIS etc) under one big forum sounds good for me and that's how it is today. |

I'm not sure what you mean by DS unless you're talking about the databases. I think the Databases category is perfect the way it is (SQL, Access, SQL Server).
I problem I see with having ASP, VB, ASP.NET, VB.NET is that they integrate with other technologies like JavaScript, C#, JScript, which can all be consider web technologies. The problem we're having is when categories cross over from HTML Help to Coding Help to Programming Help so if we eliminate the vagueness and encompass larger areas like Website Development and Software Development, we eliminate a lot of that cross-over confusion. I think there should be very few instances where a topic would apply to both Website Development and Software Development. I also don't agree (personally) with the idea of "other." Other is never "other" in practice. I feel like that would discourage people from posting topics other than ASP/VB/.NET. |

Maybe I didn't make my idea clear. Since people post in a hurry they'll have fewer things to look through with my idea. Website Development or Software Development. That should make their choice of where to post very easy. All those languages I mentioned are not sub-topics. They're for the description of the topic.
For example, the Programming heading would have the following categories: Software Development, Website Development |

I'm pretty sure I have a minority opinion at this point
I'll vote for whatever is popular... or my vote can be bought for an undisclosed amount. |
