forum area duplication
ok, a bit random but still
there seems to be a bit of duplication which imo causes some confusion. we have a "code help" forum and further down a "programming help" forum seems a bit odd to me. Surely both are used for the same thing? also, in those areas you get people asking for help with asp and .net programming which should surely be in the "asp development" and ".net development" areas respectivly? so, can we not get rid of the "programming help" area and then rename the "code help" forum to "other programming languages help" or something along those lines, names aren't my thing. it would just seem to organise the forum a bit better and 1) make it easier for people to post in the correct area and 2) make it easier for people trying to help others to look in the areas where they have most knowledge rather than having to trawl through every forum to find a question that shoul dhave been in the asp area!! i know this won't solve everything because you still get people posting in the wrong place either by accident or through pure laziness but i think this would help... what do you think ? As I understand it, the code help forum is intended for complete code samples. The name is a tad confusing tho and could be changed to "Post your complete code samples here" or something like

mmm, maybe. Still not sure of its usefulness tho. Something like "General Programming Help : Languanges without specific sections" would be better, the bit after the colon being the forum description rather than the title ![]() |

I agree that there should be more specific name as I recently posted and did not really know where to post. Maybe change the name to General Advice\Help Forum????

it has already been asked and suggested... I believe that once we reach decision the admins would listen. right now the Code Forum *should* contain only code samples (that was its original goal, I try to restore that goal in the recent months) but due to its name, it contains all kinds of posts. cleaning up and moving posts to their proper location is the dirty work of being moderator...
![]() as for the Programming Help forum, in my opinion it should really contain all "general" posts related to programming (thus does not belong to the Lounge) but not related to any other forum - e.g. PHP as we don't have such forum. Phil, your question do belong there IMO - it's not any specific problem so it's general programming issue. ![]() so, to make it official, let's think about proper name for the forums, vote and send the new suggestion to the admins. my suggestions: --- 1. Code Help forum will be renamed to "Code Bank". description is fine. 2. Programming Help forum will be moved to the Programming forums and renamed to "General Programming Help" and its description:"General Programming Help forum discussing general programming solutions and code assistance related issues which does not fit in the other forums." --- I would like to hear more suggestions, when we gather enough I'll put Poll or something and the most fit suggestion would be officially given to the admins to review. |

i think the "General Programming Help and Advice Forum" would be very useful and would be used properly.
the code bank idea is good, but even if people do use it to put their code in, will people search it/use it enough?? there are so many pre-written code sites i personally don't see a useful requirement for the code bank...just my opinion of course ![]() |
