I use Dreamweaver almost every single day, but I still code
everything by hand. All of it. I only use the 'Design View' for
helping to debug peoples nested tables in nested tables and
for creating image maps [very rarely].

For me, it's things like the code indenting/colouring/completion,
the remote coding/ftp to server and 'site' tricks that make it
the best...

The fact that it produces the cleanest* code from the design
view is just a bonus [although very handy for amateurs], and
makes it even better IMO.

*cleanest meaning tidiest/least bulky code compared to other
editors like FrontPage and GoLive...

If the programmer forgets how to code properly because of these tools then yes, they are causing the programmer to become a less-skilled programmer. However... a pilot uses auto-pilot during a flight does that make him/her a lesser-skilled pilot? Same with those sensors in car bumpers that beep when you're close to another object. Do they make you worse at backing up? I see it as technology helping us to be closer to error-free in a skill we have supposedly learned. I think whether technology causes you to lose skill doesn't apply to all of those examples, rather it probably applies to programming and backing up in a car. When those tools start to fail or are unavailable, that'll separate the men from the boys. You and I will know how to program or script without the use of tools but Little Jimmy will have some syntax errors and those might occur in a "test" given by a prospective employer during a job interview. I think that these speed-enhancing tools are good as long as you don't forget that you need to be able to program/script on your own. To get back to the pilots, i'm ok with pilots using auto-pilot as long as they know 100% what they're doing in case auto-pilot isn't available some time. Same with scripting.
