General Question - How many of you are self-taught
Just curious, what do you think the percentage of the professional developers is that are self-taught? Meaning, those who are either self-employed or employed by a company to develop web sites. Can you be successful in this field without formal training, regardless of the type of coding it is done in (i.e. .NET, CF, PHP)?

I'd say the majority of us are self-taught. I am and I am working as web developer for an agency. I had no formal training except for what I taught myself and what I've learned here on these forums. I think you'll find that the majority of the people who might respond to this post will same something similar.

I got my 4 year degree in CIS, but learned many times more using my real world experience and learning from my mistakes. Sometimes it takes getting your feet wet, learning from hands-on experience, and picking up great techniques from brilliant people in these forums. hang around for a while, take some notes, start building your own asp pages, learn .Net, learn the backend process, etc....

I am self-taught... but then I don't know anything, so I just spoiled the grading curve.

-jmurrayhead, thanks for the reply. I have come across many of your replies other posts on .net fourm and found them very helpful. I would have never known that you were self- taught.

-chapman10s, I totally agree that hands-on exprience is a good way to learn. Especially if your in an environment when you are not under pressure. Luckily for me I'm not. I've been a registred user here for a few years now. I first stumbled on these forums looking for help with SQL, now I've crossed over to the .net world. As you can tell from my post count that i'm pretty quite when it comes to posting. Mostly becuase I don't have any help to offer. Hopefully after sometime I can will be able to offer my help to others.

Welcome back, jira. Forum etiquette dictates that one refrain from posting several times when one post will do.

hmmm
an interesting thread to me. I am self-taught for the most part and have definitely found these forums very helpful, but when it comes to questions involving more than a quick answer, I find more often than not it's hard to get a reply, so I definitely feel that while knowing how to make something happen in .net, I don't necessarilly know the best way in terms of code efficiency and scalability. What's the best way to ask these questions or get answers to these sort of things? Or am I being silly?
