How many processors can a server have?
Hi Guys,
I was just reading up on SQL Server licensing because i dont fully understand the whole process. While I was reading up on it, I read on some website that SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition supports up to 32 CPUs and 64GB of RAM (more on 64-bit systems). How on earth can a motherboard hold that many processors, or am I completely missing the point here? If there are motherboards out there that can hold more than 2~4 processors, then where do you get them from?!? Thanks!

Quite a few vendors (HP/Compaq and IBM) make 8 way Xeon and AMD servers. Dell used to make them and then pulled out of the market. Sun also makes 8-way x86 servers, but of course, they don't run Windows. I've also seen 16-way x86 servers from IBM and they also make 32 and 64 processor monster models as well. Those models start at about $85,000 or so.
