is amd64 worth it?
As the title suggests really. I am thinking of pulling my system down and building a shuttle pc but can't decide if i should go for an amd64. Any suggestion from those with them or those that have tried them? a lot of difference? I won't be playing games on it but i do a lot of graphics and web design/programming, internet, office stuff etc. IT would be quite heavily used, many apps in use at once etc.
thanks |

As I understand it, there isn't much difference when running 32 bit software, but as more 64 bit software is written and released they will begin to shine.
If you want try 64 bit performance now you'll have to get one of the 64 bit Linux distros and (possibly modify) and compile the software you want to use |

I think there is a small improvement in 32 bit software - but not that much. At the moment its more a choice for future-proofing

If you decide to go 64bit, you'll have to make a report, so we know for sure if its worth doing. Hey you could be the radioactiveguineapig

I think I'll wait for the 128bit version.

I have an AMD XP 3000 [Newcastle] and it's as sweet as a nut.
You can get WindowsXP 64bit Edition trial versions for free from the Microsoft website. It's not great yet, cos the driver support for is still a bit lacking, but still, the major hardware brands are starting to release 64bit drivers, so yeah, I'd say go for it. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...tion/trial.mspx
