Is DMOZ Dead or Dying?

I wonder if there are any members who might throw some light on what's happening at DMOZ. I have been submitting sites there for a healthy length of time and for the past month and a bit I have been getting service Unavailable errors when I try and submit a site.

I've done a wee bit of research and no-one can remember DMOZ being down this long.

Seemingly its backed by AOL / Time Warner, remember those guys trying to bring back Netscape *cough*. I wonder if this is terminal? If it is then this would be a perfect time for some company to offer an DMOZ alternative.

Yeah that's a back-up of the database they have running but it is no longer, well hasn't been for over a month, allowing new submissions. When you consider it has a PR rank of 8 linking to your site its a massive omission for any new site not to have.

I signed up to DEV SEO and those guys are pretty much saying the same thing: What is happening? When will it be back up and running? If it is dead then who will succeed it - if anybody or will it all be paid directory inclusions?

Too many questions and defo not enough answers.
