Is thermal compound supposed to disolve my CPU?!?
Hi Guys,
I just upgraded my motherbaord today and when I cleaned the thermal compound off of the cpu, I noticed that some of the metal on the cpu had been eroded away/disolved. Is this supposed to happen with some thermal pastes? These erosion marks definately weren't there when i first installed the cpu (about a month ago). Thanks in advance!

Are you sure it's not just marks from the thermal compound being pressed on there tightly (it'll dry rock hard, and can be so thin that its hard to tell it's the paste)? I can't believe that thermal paste dissolved the heat shield on your cpu...
Take some rubbing alcohol and a qtip and try to clean it off. |

Yes, it's definately disolved parts of the aluminium heatshield on the cpu. I've used some TIM (CPU/Heatsink cleaning fluid) to take off all of the thermal compound, and there are 2 darkened areas on the cpu surface where it looks like the metal has started to decay/burn. The damage on the side of the CPU is even worse (where the thermal compund had dribbled down) - it has physically eaten away at the metal and if you run you finger over it, it is very rough. |

wow. what the hell was on that cpu? Are you sure you didn't confuse the thermal paste with hydrochloric acid
Go get some arctic silver and use that. I've used it for years and never had any problems. |

Yeah I've been meaning to get my hands on some AS5 or AS Ceramique. I used some Coolermaster Premium Thermal Compound. Either that is a part of the bonding/curing process, or I accidentally left a tiny bit of TIM on there from last time and it started to react with the thermal compound. Anyhoo, I'll stick with Artic Silver next time ![]() |
