Kudos to you all
First a bit about myself. I have a full time cruddy job that I've been doing since high school and recently passed my 20th anniversary there. Not exactly where I want to be but it's "secure" and almost pays the bills. First time on a computer was just 5-6 years ago on a hand-me-down where after realizing that web surfing isn't my thing, I stumbled into MS Publisher and saw the ability to create web pages. Then I was hooked. A bit of community college and a lot of self teaching, tutorials and trial and error, I now am a world ahead of before, yet without being anywhere near where many of you are. I am much more verse in Access/VBA than HTML and related coding. I spend most of my time here looking through other people's inquiries and your solutions and ideas to help in order to better educate myself. Only after attempted searches do I post a problem, trying to be detailed and not waste anyone's time. This is anywhere I post. I also try and answer things when I can and feel confident in my response.
OK, ok, to the point. I recently posted a question concerning PHP after going through a few tutorials at Webmonkey, and was directed to another site (that shall remain nameless as to not offend anyone). After posting there, I got two whole responses, one of which was three advices; Read a book, study PHP.net, and tackle a smaller project. I'm sorry, but not at all constructive. The other, don't think my code was even looked at. Here on this forum, there has been nothing but constructive ideas, different ways to do the same thing or meet the same goal, sample databases for people to have, disect, and learn from, etc. Basically, only positive feedback and assistance. I just wanted to recognize this and let everyone know that I, and I'm sure others, notice this. I'd spend more time here if I could, but you all know that story. Keep up the good work! -Jim Oh yeah, I got my answer to the PHP problem at www.CraigsList.org (I was missing a single quote in the code). Last edited by OneRedLT4 : March 26th, 2005 at 11:11 AM. |

hey Jim, nice to know you little bit more... I agree with what you said - we have great members around here who put from their time and efforts to help others. most amazing for me is to see ppl who came with some problems, and once they got help and their problem solved, they stayed here and started helping others. that's the true cycle of help that any forum should try to achieve, in my opinion.

Ditto what Shadow said Jim. This is one of the friendlier, more active forums around, and unlike some others does not have (too much
) of an elitist attitude. The php help here is minimal, though I guess that's to be expected on an ASP site. That said though, I for one am into PHP and am ready to help others with that as much as I can, and I'm sure there are others here that could help too. Nice to have you onboard Jim, and thanks for the recognition.

actually PHP questions are asked from time to time and even get solved, so you can post it in the Programming Help or in the Free Lounge forums. as we have all kinds of programmers here, all kinds of problems can be solved.

I've got a warm feeling inside...
Seriously though, this is an excellent forum! I've never continued to visit this type of forum as much as I do here in all the time I've been using the Internet...

selwonk If I've posted some code above, you might think it looks a bit simplistic. It might be. I'd rather people tried the next step themselves rather than getting a full solution on a plate. That way they learn more! |
