My wife found her boss' paycheck stub on the floor, what to do?
My wife and her boss, a Phd Nurse Practitioner were meeting this afternoon in her office. Her boss got up to leave and after her boss left her office; my wife found her boss' paycheck stub lying on the floor under the chair her boss had been sitting in, the stub was from last September 2006.
The other day, my wife took an envelope out of her boss' inbox in the mail room, someone else had already opened it. The contents were about my wife, it was a list of all the days she has taken and accrued for sick, vacation, etc. It was obviously something addressed to her boss from one of the HR personnel, so her boss never received it. She gave the paperwork to her boss today during the meeting. My wife doesn't know what to do, did her boss plant this pay stub so that my wife could find it to see if she's trustworthy or not. What does my wife do about finding this paycheck stub about her boss' pay? |

Your wife seems kind of nosey, IMO. If I saw an open envelope that wasn't mine, I wouldn't be looking to see what's inside. Anyway, I'd leave the items on the boss' desk. Certainly, there is no reason for her to get blamed for "finding" these items lying around.

The best rule of thumb is to just be honest--- tell her boss she found it and leave it at that.

I agree with chapman. But I'd be a bit concerned about someone who takes other people's mail out of other people's mailboxes, that can be grounds for dismissal at some companies.

Chapman is right! Gotta be honest about it. Even if it isn't a test then her boss is likely to look highly upon her for being honest!

If your wife is feeling particularily "weasel" she could also take
the opportunity to have an "un-dig" at her co-workers. Hand the stub in and say something like.. "You should be more careful. Not everyone is as honest as me" Sends a good message about her and sends a negative message about her co-workers without appearing to. Which can only be good at payrise time. I have just finished reading "Dilbert and the way of the weasel" and it has changed the way I view the world ![]() |

For starters... Your wife had no right to take mail out of her bosses mailbox unless that is one of her job duties. And then, to snoop into an envelope that is opened. This will definately come back to her when HR informs her boss that they sent correspondence to her but she had never rec'd it.
She needs to come clean to her boss... It's just wrong to take mail out of somebody else's inbox. As for the paystub. I agree with Chapman. Simply let her know that she found it and leave it at that. Watch out for the fireworks however! Hell hath no fury than the wrath of a woman! |

I agree with jmurrayhead and tc. Why the heck did she grab it in the first place? I don't just waltz into my boss' office and start opening random letters. She's going to have to bite the bullet now and tell her boss the truth.
