Why is this important to you? Didn't you learn from your parents that you shouldn't discuss religion at social gatherings?

I consider myself a liberal christian (catholic actually, which is essentially a subset of christianity). I don't, however, subscribe to some of its dogmas and I think the fundmentalist christians who preach tolerance but then start bashing homosexuality and abortion and whatnot are complete idiots. But that's an entirely different topic.

Why respond to this topic? Does it somehow make you feel better about yourself knowing that you're contributing to future discord?

I started this thread not because I care what people believe in but what forms their morals and ethics. Religion is one of the biggest factors for most people. For example, thou shalt not kill... therefore it's wrong to kill under any circumstance. I myself don't subscribe to much of any religion since they are all structurally unsound or unbacked in some sense or another.
To me, the bible, torah, koran, (excuse the spelling if it's wrong) and any other religious media is nothing more than philosophical studies. Fables designed to promote a certain behavior with an intention of bettering mankind in some way. However, to broaden the range, it's often ambiguous. Unfortunately, ambiguity leads to negative behaviors from groups of people (KKK, Nazis, etc).

Besides, why is it wrong to discuss religion? So what if it puts a bad taste in people's mouths! Get to know what other people belive in and then tolerance is prone to follow. People tend to hate things that they don't understand. Expanding your knowledge and keeping an open mind is becoming increasingly important in the global market. On the other hand, arguments such as "Christians are stupid" is not an acceptable argument. Just state why you disagree in an agreable manner. After all, we're all friends.

Mark Twain once said "common sense is most uncommon" and I can see why he felt that way.

Trying to maintain a polite discussion of religion in a forum like this is not possible. So why don't you take your question to a more appropriate place (like some other website).
