Ooh, name calling - that's original.
![]() Go on then, who have I disrespected? Although, if you consider using the disagree button as disrespect, then yes, guilty as charged.

Sorry to have stirred up a little hornet's nest. You all probably know I don't like or participate in the reputation system, but I do think it's "unseemly" at best to be publicly recommending using negative reputation in a way it was never intended to be used.
Encouraging multiple de-repping of other users, bots or otherwise, is out of line in my book, and as I said I think it's behaviour that should be discouraged. De-repping as a game further diminishes the usefulness of the rep system (such as it is). Of course, just my $00000000000000000.02

The sad fact about it all Doug, is that whateveer credit you have built up between peers or friendly seeking posters is that you could have it washed away in the Lounge just cause you don't agree with someone's beliefs. Now, to me, taking points off a peer is not on, although tonight I did take some joy in derepping the Chief [only through his backstabbing of Big Leuv and you, yourself Doug], I do not participate in such a task. I know to yourself the whole thing seems completely oblivious, to myself its strikes a different chord. Backstabbing is what I would call it. Its sneaky, juvenile and downright betrayal. Its a backstabber. Last edited by pws1970 : February 11th, 2006 at 09:48 PM. |

OK, so Doug may not personally enjoy seeing the rep system used in the way Chief used it. People have disagreements, that's life. I'm sure that neither Chief or Doug is so offended at the other one that they'll go home tonight and cry themselves to sleep in their mother's laps. (Well, Chief's a little bit iffy....
) People disagree and the world, miraculously, continues to turn. We'll all get over our disagreements, especially those that don't really carry a lot of weight in the first place. Quote:

There are three options here as I see it,
We could all ignore the reputation system completely which is never going to happen. We are all Human and if Humans could ignore stuff we would probably be sitting in caves still picking fleas out of each other fur. Instead its just marketing who do that ![]() We could take the reputation system extremely seriously, but if we were like that I think we wouldn't be the type of people who help others - at least not in our own time and for the fun of it. We could have a bit of fun with it. You know rep fests, de-repping a bot and so on. In fact there is something strangely theraputic about a rep fest.... No really! I don't think I would hugely miss the rep system if it wasn't there, but it is there, so I will use it and I'll have a spot of fun with it. I have to be serious and sensible enough at work. Sod being serious and sensible in one of the things I do for fun! I usually read, but don't join in these type of threads but this time it seems that nothing has quickly gotten out of control.... Well, because of some of the points in this discussion, long ago I put my vote in both here and at devshed to remove the rep system but it was overruled. IMHO the rep system has been fun for a few, and ruined the lounges for others like me.
The whole point of my orignial post is that there are a lot of people who are very much into gaining "good" positive rep points, and turning de-repping into a game hurts. The only solution I could come up with for myself is to completely ignore the rep system, which I do. It's useless to me, it detracts from the forum, and makes the lounge far less interesting. Since the rep system has been introduced, the vast majority of posts in the lounge have been to get rep points rather than saying anything interesting. Any actual discussion of any interesting but relatively serious subject is ruined within a few posts because someone leaves negative rep, or simply makes "cute" comments with the hope of getting more rep. So I have my interesting discussions elsewhere nowdays rather than at devshed, but that is disappointing to me, since it's that much more difficult to "get to know" members here. Oh well ... $00000000000.02 again ![]() |

Hello All,
I was having a bright moment this morning so i decided to give some response to this topic which i quess wasn't brought up yet. To be short, i think its a good idea to enable the reputation system only with subforums related to programming. The reputation system will stay intact as it is, except it will NOT be possible to use the reputation system for threads present in for instance the lounge anymore. People are lounging and relaxing there, so why should people get points for those activities. On the other hand this will also stimulate people for helping others with programming issues. To be honest, once in a while i get back to ASPfree and see how fellow-users doubled their reputation power (and gained an extraordinary amount of green blobs). Then immediately i think...ah there was a "rep. fest" again!! knowing these points were gained so easily. On the other hand helping others (mostly the new members, because the old members mostly are experienced enough) with programming issues, in most cases doesn't earn that much reputation (1, 2 maybe 3 points at the time...), so you get much more satisfaction from your work you've done. best regards, Leuvenaar |

To be honest, it doesn't matter to me if someone gives me rep
to say thanks for helping or adds a post to say the same thing. They both feel great but so few people actually do either that rep seems to have become a game almost by default. Use rep seriously or as a toy or indeed not at all, it's all good and at the end of the day, when all's said and done and the fat lady is singing, its not really that important. Is it? |
