Text MMORPG's
Do you play any text MMORPG's? If so, which?
I've got an idea for one of mine, and I wanted to see if anyone liked my idea, or even if it's already taken by someone else. My idea is that you have a character that gains power and money (like most RPG's). The new idea is that it would be based on video games like Final Fantasy, or even like Pokemon or whatever. You would gain experience points for positive things here and there, and at a set amount of experience points, your character would increase a level. At each level, your paycheck increases and your character's troops would become more powerful. It's hard to explain without saying everything, but I think you're starting to get the idea... Does the idea sound interesting at all?

It doesn't sound too revolutionary. You do stuff, you get points, you level up, you become better off that lower levelled people around you. Sounds just like any other game

I have spent a lot of time this summer thinking about text-based RPG's. I have come to the conclusion that its impossible to come up with a unique idea.

![]() as for this particular case you may be right - because the problem is with the concept of RPG itself: you take the role of some character and under this role you do things, kill evil monsters and gain power. not much to add here. however the little details like character type, special abilities, monsters, kinds of items, type of world etc are not limited, and this is where unique ideas can come into action. if I were to build text-based RPG, I would choose .NET for that - downloadable client executable, which connect with the server using standard web services. building basic shell would probably take me only couple of hours of work (client connecting with remote server via web service) so if you choose .NET as well just let me know and I can find the time - it would also help you learn the .NET concepts which is good investment for the future..... ![]() |

very similar ideas
FF8 had "paychecks" I didn't like that too good. I like killing and earning money =D. And what you mean troops? How many players do you control?
On a side note, what'd really be cool is a constantly evolving world. Monsters get tougher anc slowly change/add/remove immunities and weaknesses. Players gain small amounts of exp while not active (something like 5% every hour or two) to stand a chance against the evolving world. Of course the monsters evolve at a rate faster than that. |

I won't be using any of their characters, but it will be of the same type of concept. As for gecko's idea, that sounds excellent, I will keep that in mind...It would be kind of cool to not only attack other human players and be attacked by them, but have random non-human player encounters...now that's interesting.

As for my troops idea, you will have an army, and at each level up, you can choose different ways to train your army, etc...Certain things will decide how powerful your army is: size, training, equipment, etc.
