Wage for small task programmer?
I'm currently programming a small project for a company and they're asking what I think is reasonable for pay. They mentioned £6 ($10.60) per hour is common for them in the UK. I'm wondering, is that good, or what? I'm new to all of this, so I wanted your opinions.
Thanks! Dan

Sometimes in order to get your feet wet, and get a reference under your belt it's good to get something like that.
You're young bbd, I sure wish I was web developing at your age. So I would say this: If you can get maybe 2 gbp more great, if not, then why wouldn't 10.60 look good for someone so young such as yourself. I don't know how much you get paid, but you can't beat experience. Price looks good to me to start out. Just my 0.02 cents

Firstly Lewy makes an excellent point.
Is it freelance stuff? or set amount of days per week? If it is freelance i would say £10 is good for your age. If it is the latter than i would say no more than £8. Remember experience is everything when your young. Building up your portfolio is important so getting some good clients at a lower price to start with is the way to go!

Take what they're offering and do a good job.
Then when they ask you to do more work in the future you have leverage for getting more money. Money comes with skill and experience. You're young, so take what you can get and demonstrate what you can do. At this point in your "career" getting professional experience is the most important thing. The more skill and experience you get the more money you can command. |

I worked in College for a small company doing a basic website - they paid me $12/hour cash.
Since you don't get any benefits - determine how much your time is worth. Can you see yourself spending a sunday programming for $20 total? I recommend taking the job, learn how to work with requests from an user (which usually sucks).

Take the experience and slap it on your CV. More and more employers, nowaydays, are looking for experience and qualifications. It can be difficult to get a job without one or the other -- the catch 22 routine kicks in -- and with Uni's splilling thousands of new wannabe developers out into the job market each year its gonna get even more harder to get your foot in the door. |
