Your computer can pick up and store temporary files when you're looking at webpages and even when you're working on files in programs, such as Microsoft Word. Over time, these files slow your computer's performance. You can use the Windows Disk Cleanup tool to rid your computer of these unneeded files and to help your PC run faster.

@Annaharris you can turn off automatic updates in Windows 7... however that is probably not a good idea as it will make your system vulnerable to attack. It might serve you better to change the install time to 4 am or some off time like that. Go to start>control panel>(switch to Icon view in top right)>Windows Update> Change Settings. I hope that helps. As for how to fix slow computer there are many ways to go about making your computer super fast. One thing I have not seen mentioned is check for spyware or adware. These two forms of malware have become as bad as getting an actual virus. Defrag doesn't really effect Windows 7 as much as previous versions of Windows as it does it automatically. Use the Windows Disk Cleanup tool to automatically clear up unwanted and junk files. See the guide titled "How to Free Hard Drive Space" for a step by step walkthrough on how to use this tool. Cheers!
