Windows Reverse Engineering
Why would security experts need to learn reverse code engineering (RCE)? The most common reason is to reverse malware such as viruses or Trojans. The antivirus industry depends on the ability to dissect binaries in order to diagnose, disinfect, and prevent them. Authors Peikari and Chuvakin assert that as a software reverse engineer, you are only as good as your tools. They explain hex editors, disassemblers such as IDA Pro, the debugger SoftICE, ProcDump for unpacking, and more, with examples and references. (From book Security Warrior, by Cyrus Peikari and Anton Chuvakin, from O'Reilly Media, 2004, ISBN: 05960055458).
