401.1 error requesting localhost from IIS 5.1 under Win XP
Ok, it is getting close to a week now that I have been beating the bushes for a solution to this problem. I would like to lean ASP, so the first thing I needed to do was have access to a MS server. I went through the installation of IIS 5.1 under Win XP.
Problem: Once IIS is installed I am unable to request pages from its directory. I get the 401.1 you are not authorized page. A couple of things: I already had Apache installed using port 80 so I assigned IIS 8080. IIS also uses a different directory. My version of Win XP Professional came pre installed from Compaq so I don’t have the normal cds. When I went through the installation process IIS was already checked and the check box was grey. I have contacted CompaqI am currently trying to decipher the MS trouble shooting articles. |

OK, I found the problem.
When installing IIS, make sure that in the same check list make sure that Networking Services is check. Also, highlight Network Services and hit the Details button. This brings up another list of options. I just clicked them all on so I’m not sure which one you need. I think it is Simple TCP/IP Services. |
