Doug G.... wondering if you can help me
I was wondering if you or anyone else that reads this can help me.
I am trying to run 2 differnt websites from 1 server. But for some reason I can not get the 2nd site to show up. All that keeps coming up is SITE NOT FOUND. I have tried running Host Headers on it(was not really sure what I was doing with them but I googled it and found instructions on how to and I followed them). If you could please lead in me in the right direction of how to solve my problem it would be much appriciated Thanks in advance to anyone that reply's to this. It has been giving me a headache since 9:15 this morning. (its 3:10 right now) |

ok first thing first I went into our REPORTS server(which has a site for our internal reports) IIS and I did a NEW SITE. While going through the new site steps I did a host header and I called it TestSite. I left the ip "all unassigned" and then I continued. through the process of setting up a new site on a server.
Once I finshed making the site, I went to the ip address it was supposed to be at. and NOTHING. Just Page Not Found. So i tried the ip/TestSite and Nothing. So I went back in and I went to Properties for the TestSite and I went to advanced in the Web Site Identification and I went to the ip address and added what it was supposed to be and then I set the host header to TestSite so I tried the steps before typed in ip...Nothing age not found.so i tried ip/TestSite ... Nothing : Page not Found. So I went back into the advanced button in Web Site Identification and I change the Host Header to the IP address it was supposed to be.... and .. guess what.. the test site WORKED... BUT then the other site did NOT work. SO i kept messing around and I could not get it to work. So i deleted the test site and the 1st site is still not working... This is why I was doing this on a TEST Server before I put it up on our Production server. PLEASE help me before I go mad!!! Everything I try it will not work. I have googled my errors and I have googled host headers, I have contacted the people where our Production Server is housed -- they arent much help, and I cant seem to figure it out. The only thing I told my boss is that maybe I am having trouble doing the host headers b/c they are IP addresses instead of website names (192.100.100.38 vs www.mysitewontwork.com) Below is the exact steps I followed to set up the host header : Instructions from Microsoft Using the Web Site Creation Wizard to add a Web site To add a Web site using a host header identifier using the Web Site Creation Wizard: 1. In IIS Manager, expand the local computer, right-click the Web Sites directory, point to New, and then click Web Site. 2. Click Next. 3. In the Description box, type the name you have selected for the Web site, and then click Next. 4. In the Enter the IP address to use for this Web site box, click the IP address used by all sites on the server. 5. In the TCP port this Web site should use box, type the port number used by all sites on the server. 6. In the Host Header for this Web site (Default:None) box, type the host header name to identify the Web site. The host header name must containing the full name of the site, for example, www.microsoft.com. 7. If SSL encryption is not enabled on the server, the SSL port box does not appear. If SSL encryption is enabled on the server, type the SSL port number, and then click Next. 8. In the Path box, type or browse to the path of your Web site home directory. 9. To create a secured or private Web site, clear the Allow anonymous access to this Web site check box, and click Next. (Web sites are configured for anonymous access by default.) 10. In the Web Site Access Permissions box, set the permissions for the home directory. 11. Click Next, and then click Finish. |

Host headers are for sharing a single IP among more than one website. If you have a different IP address for your test site simply set up a new website and assign that IP to it (instead of all unassigned). At that point your new site should be available via IP.
If you have a dns name for the site, then dns needs to resolve the name to the correct IP address. The DNS administrator should set that up. I don't use host headers, but my understanding is they extract the domain portion of a http request and directs the request to the appropriate website. So for example, if you had 3 domain names, and all three domains dns resolves to the same IP address of your web server, the host headers will pick the proper website from the domain name. My guess is that if you reference your site by IP address you'll get whatever the server considers to be the primary website for the IP address. Maybe this will help. http://www.iisfaq.com/Default.aspx?tabid=2523 |
