In Internet Explorer, open Tools - Internet Options - Advanced Options and uncheck the "show friendly http errors" setting to get more detailed error information.

If you weren't logged in as administrator when you installed IIS uninstall it and reinstall as administrator.

I only use NTFS myself, I don't know if there are any FAT related issues or not.

I've changed the setting in internet explorer and now I get this error:

Server Error
The following error occurred:
Bad URL

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please contact the administrator.

I installed IIS under the administrator account and I also use NTFS.

This may shed some light on those of you helping me.
When I unplugg my network cable, which is the cable containing my internet connection, IIS works fine. Both html and asp pages work. Once the cable is plugged and I have internet, IIS gives that error...

PLZZZ HELP!

Check your hosts file for an invalid entry for localhost. It should translate to 127.0.0.1

You can try use http://127.0.0.1 in your browser.

It sounds like you have a network routing problem outside of IIS.

I'm not too sure what you mean by "check your host files for invalid..." The link you gave me still yields the same results...

Thanks for your help

Thank you Doung for your help, turned out, once I unchecked the automatically detect settings checkbox under internet option==> connections==>lan settings, it all works now. Just one more question, now that my server works how do I get it on the internet?

Thanks for your help

There is a file on your computer named hosts. This file is for local DNS entries and will override a DNS lookup. This file from MS comes with one entry, 127.0.0.1 localhost, which defines the localhost alias.

If someone had messed with this hosts file you could get strange results. In your case it sounds like there is some proxy server that was changing things around.

Before you expose your server to the Internet be absolutely sure you have all security fixes and windows updates up-to-date. There are lots of robot zombie servers that are testing IP's looking for known flaws.

To put your server on the worldwide internet, you will need to register a domain name (godaddy can do this), identify and set up your internet DNS (zoneedit does DNS), open port 80 and 443 through any firewalls/proxies directing port 80 traffic to your web server.

Ok, thanks for all the info.

Could you please go in more detail how I can put my server up and find all the most recent updates?

I'm currently using IIS V.5.1 and what are the risks about using IIS?

And please give me more detailed description on how to put my server on the Internet.

Thanks in advance!

oh yeah, one more thing, how do I see my server by typing in my IP? When I type in my default gateway and current ip, both give me errors...
