Host Name Resolution ????????
I know this may not be the correct place to post this question but I hoping someone can help me.
We are in the process of setting up an Intranet Site for our company. We would like to be able to navigate to the site by using www.thecompanyintranet.com (or simply thecompanyintranet.com) instead of theservername/thewebsharename (the lader of the two is currently possible)
I have correctly configured the "Host Header Name" in IIS (5.0 on win2k). I created a new web site and pointed it to a virtual directory.
On the "Advanced Multiple Web Site Configuration" page I changed the IP Address from (All Unassigned) to 10.0.0.1, TCP Port = 80, and the Host Header Name = www.thecompanyintranet.com.
Now I know I need to configure the Host Header Name resolution in DNS (WinNT 4.0), but while I have access to the DNS Server I have no knowledge as to how to configure DNS (I'm a programmer not a Network Admin).
I have found several documents on the web, but since I don't understand the terminology it's difficult for me to understand how to configure things.
What would be helpful is step by step instructions on how to configure the DNS server so www.thecompanyintranet.com resolves to either 10.0.0.1 or theservername.
Thanks for any help,
matchbx
P.S. We will have multiple web sites pointing to the same server so modifying the WINS is not a solution we want to implement.
