Hey wondering if someone could point me in the right direction here.
- am looking to bypass the XP Pro limit of only one web site allowed on the machine running XP Pro, is there something out there that will help hosting multiple sites on XP Pro??? - am looking to secure my website with SSL, is there anything or could someone shed some light, on what SSL actually is or does and how to configure it for my site(s)?? When it comes to Certificate Authority(s) what are these authorities actually doing??(ie what am I paying for??) - basically just tips when it comes to setting up or configuring IIS to run my site... if someone could point me in the right direction here, I would be stoked!! kr, antimatter )) |

With your requirements, you will need a server version OS.

hey, well basically spending all night trawling the web, this issue seems to come up again and again. The Story(morning glory) :
- basically, Microsoft have disabled two major functions on the XP Pro version of IIS 5.1. 1. They have blocked any way for you to set up more than 1 root web site on IIS (more then one domain, if you wanted to host more then one web site they have stopped you from doing it!) 2. They have stopped yuo from enabling or activating more then one web site on IIS XP Pro. Basically, there is a workaround on the web for the first issue, its at http://www.firstserved.net/services/iisadmin.php, BUT WAIT!! If you actually wanted to host more then one website don't bother installing this workaround tool, because even after you've set up the additonal web sites in IIS with this tool, you still can't activate (Start) the web site, you can only have one site running at any one time, completely useless if you want to host more then one site. Basically, the moral of the story is that Micorsoft are fascists and they make sure that if you want to host more then one site in your home (or office) you have to purchase Server, and like do I look like I got money growing out my ears! So, for me fellow bandits it's on with the Microsoft cap and off to buy Server Small Business Edition. Well at least I will be able to host my own pop3 server. Small respite. Good Luck!! |

What ridiculous comments! If you are not willing to buy a product you need for your project, then use something else. Calling names doesn't help your project at all. Even if you were to get multiple websites hacked into XP Pro you'd find more surprises. There are connection limits built in to XP. |

it aint exactly new right, I mean if anyone has a reputation for clearly capitalist coporate policy it's microsoft!, however they do such a great job by fooling you into thinking you are doing the right thing and justify it as well, that they kick their feet bacak afterwards and say well done everyone?? but what do you do?? when in Rome right?

Maybe you should take a trip to the next wto conference. However, keep posts here on the subject of IIS technical details. |

Microsoft don't make money by giving stuff away...that's a no brainer.
but if cost is an issue... Why don't you use Apache? Run it on linux and you're set...it just means you have to learn something a bit different. |
