HTTPS only works with port assignment

Hey gang,

I have run into an issue with ISS 5.0 on a Win2000 server. I have installed a SSL certificate and all seems to be working fine, however... when I try to view the site via HTTPS it does not display. But if I type in HTTPS://www.sitename.com:4130 the site displays over a secure connection. The SSL is configured for port 4130 through the IIS console.

I was under the impression that IIS would handle the changes from HTTP to HTTPS.

The only thing I am wondering (other than getting it all working correctly) is that the server is behind a firewall. I have the IPs and ports setup in the firewall correctly (at least what I think is correct) but might that account for the reason the port address needs to be on the URL in order for this to work?

Suggestions and feedback welcome.

If you have edited the ssl port to 4130 I would expect IIS to work right without you having to specify the port. Have you restarted IIS / Rebooted the server? I've seen some versions of IIS ignore configuration changes until restarted.

Problem solved.

By the way.... I figured this one out. As it turns out the client has two domains. Both are pointing to the same web site and use the same files. However, the client was going to the older domain and when they would be redirected to a secure connection it would be to the new domain and thus all their session information was lost. Once we put in a redirect from the older domain to the newer one the issue was resolved.

Isn't it amazing how we trip over our own ignorance sometimes.

Anyway, thought I would post how this was resolved for anyone in the future.
