IIS not starting?

Hello,

I tried reading through some threads but didn't find the answer so here goes:

I'm running Windows 2000 and installed IIS (I believe it is version 3)
Intention is to use the Web Development stuff in Visual Studio.NET (which doesn't startup with a server with ASP.NET installed)

However, I can't even display a mere page on my localhost.

At services I have:
IIS-controlservice: Started

At Internet Information Services I have:
* wardu (my pc name)
- Standard FTP-site
-Standard website
-Virtual standardserver for SMTP
All three are stopped, and I can't start them: "service responded incorrectly to start command"

Personal Web Manager
-> Says it's "working"
-> Also says it can't display the start page because ... (There is nothing after because)

I can ping 127.0.0.1 / localhost and wardu
But I don't get any page of course

Any thoughts?

How did you install IIS? W2K supports IIS 5.0, and you install it from Add-Remove Windows Components.

There is no IIS-controlservice service in W2K IIS5. The http server service is the World Wide Web Publishing Service.

If you have firewall software installed, try stopping the WWW service and set it's startup to manual, reboot, and then restart the WWW service. Your firewall may ask if it's ok to run WWW as a service.

If you have antivirus script blocking installed try disabling it & see if that helps.

Thanks for your reply

Altough this question might make me look totally stupid, I like to believe I'm not
I don't have a firewall installed nor am I running an anti-virus program, so that is not the problem. Apache is working perfectly for example. (But doesn't support ASP.NET unfortunately)

I also installed IIS using the way you described. (It was called Internet-services (IIS))

I'm not sure if it was IIS3, I just thought I saw that somewhere

Anyway:
I found the World Wide Web Publicationservice
It was not running (Perhaps I should have looked further then just IIS in the services list) and when I try to start it I get:
Error 1717: Interface is unknown

Hehe I found another post by you (Doug G) where you said to install the latest Service Pack. I'll try that now.

Installing service pack 4 didn't work.
I did get 2 errors during the installation though, but I guess that they are MSN related since that was still running.

You must be an administrator user when you install IIS.
