IIS woes
I have a new dell PC and installed IIS from Add/Remove windows components and nothing seems to be working correctly.
1) When I open the IIS snap in, for some reason, I can't get to the properties when I right click on my computer name. 2) I can't create a new website or virtual directory under the websites folder, but the default web site is listed. 3) IIS is not responding to any requests and I'm sure the services are running. IE just hangs forever when trying to use the url http://localhost or http://127.0.0.1 I've been looking for two days now for answers before posting but I'm getting nowhere. I never had any troubles with IIS when I ran windows 2k. Can anyone give me a clue? -jbenckert |

0) Why are you using a Dell? (Dude! You're going to hell!)
1) Right clicking a node doesn't give you its properties... just a menu ![]() 2) IIS5.1 only lets you have a single website. Use IIS5.0 or 6.0 if you want more than one. 3) Use Firefox and install LiveHTTPHeaders and take a look there. |

If you're running any script blocking software try turning it off, often that causes scripts to hang. Likewise if you have any firewall software running make sure the http port is open.
Oh yeah, I'm typing this on one of my Dell's ![]()

No script blocking, no firewall. As for right-clicking on the node, what I meant was that "properties" is not an available choice on the menu.
Installed LiveHTTPHeaders in Firefox, made sure everything was disabled (script blocking, firewall). IIS not responding so LiveHTTPHeaders isn't doing much for me. -jbenckert |

Did this IIS ever work right?
If not, perhaps you managed to install IIS as a non-administrator user, which can cause all sorts of strange things to occur. |

No, still not working. I'm sure I installed it as an administrator...getting ready to wipe the comp if I don't figure this out soon.

You could try reinstalling IIS. Also somewhere on the MS site there is a program that resets the IIS permissions but I don't recall what it's called. You shouldn't need to wipe the computer for an IIS problem unless you're having other problems.

have you sorted this problem or not?
you say "when you ran win2k, you didnt have any problems" do I assume you're running Win2003 then? |

I think we can assume that you are running Windows XP, because Win2003 has IIS6, and XP is shipped with IIS5.1. In the first post, you said you couldn't create websites, which you cannot in IIS 5.1! ![]() |
