IIS Works on Intranet and NOT on Internet!
I am running Windows XP Professional on my desktop computer which is behind a linksys router. Here are the following things that I have done and am hoping someone can catch what I am missing:-
- IIS is installed - The computer has a static ip address - The firewall is disabled (I will enable it once I can get it to work, but to keep it simple I have kept it disabled for now) - The router is configured to forward port 80 (HTTP) and 21 (FTP) to the static ip address of the computer - I can see the website, both using the 192.168.1.1XX (Internal IP) and if I also using my external IP address on any other of the home computers - http://localhost/ does not work and I dont know why - Not sure that it matters but I have charter cable internet, but I might as well mention it just in case. Thanks, DesignFlaw |

Some ISP's block port 80 so you can't run a webserver on your connection. You might try running your webserver on an alternate port & see if you can get outside access then.

Thanks Doug, I called charter and they said that the ports are indeed blocked for residential services. I just switched to charter so didnt know. Anyhow, with hosting a website idea out of the picture, do you have any idea why http://localhost/ wont work ?

I don't know on the localhost problem. localhost is an alias for 127.0.0.1 You need to test localhost from the web server computer. Also, if you are not connected to the Internet you may need to retry once to get your tcp working right without the Net.

Hey yes I installed IIS 5.0 on my machine not too long ago had the same problems.
Try instead of using your LAN ip address use the one for your router, the external ip adress mine ended up being something like 24.168.xxx.xxx. Hope it works for you. |
