IIS7 with Vista Home Basic

Hi guys,

I tried to use IIS7 with Vista Home Basic but unfortunately it is not fully supported by Vista Home Basic.

One of the solutions which comes into my mind was to use Vmware Workstation or Virtual PC for Windows XP. VmWare does not support an installation on Vista also Virtual PC is not compatible with Vista Home Basic.

Is there any web server like IIS7 which might be installed on Vista Home Basic and could handle ASP or ASP.NET request?

Apart from Wmware and Virtual PC, any chance to find a software which might be installed on Vista Home Basic?

Lastly, if there is not any solution regarding the above questions, How can I install XP over vista?

So far could not find good explanation on the net....

Thanx,
deniz

Just get a version of Vista that includes IIS. Or nuke your Vista installation and start over with XP if that's what you prefer.

There are alternate web servers available, try google, but I don't know if any offer the same asp/NET functionality of IIS.

The bare min specs for running IIS on Vista is Vista Business or Ultimate.

If you are developing .net apps, Visual Studio has its own cut down personal web
server engine.

This engine does not require you to have IIS on the pc so you can definitely
use it on Vista Home Basic.

Something to think about

Apache is mostly geared towards php, perl, java and such.

You can make asp.net work on Apache http://weblogs.asp.net/israelio/arc.../11/424852.aspx but I
seriously doubt that a .net app would actually perform better than the same app on IIS.

Thats a good point, however, the guy's running Vista Home Basic, I seriously doubt that he's going to be running mission-critical apps where performance is going to be that much of an issue =)

IIS doesn't actually work on Home Basic anyway does it, that was the reason for the original post..?

No it doesn't and if there's a patch / quick fix to make it work, it wouldn't work as it should.

Just in case anyone is trying to set up IIS for .net on Vista Home Basic or WinXp Home, don't, just the mere fact that you install
any of the Visual Studio IDEs like VS2005, VS2008 or any of the Express Editions
you already get the Cassini Web Server and this should allow you to test asp.net pages.
