Angry New User! Error on page http://localhost

I have Windows XP Pro installed and I installed IIS from the add remove programs in windows. Http://localhost dose not work. Why?
The installation of IIS completed successfully but I can not view the page? What am I doing wrong?

I had the same problem on my XP Pro machine so I made a new partition and installed a fresh copy of XP Pro and still the same results. I even tried turing off the firewall thats automatically turned on in XP.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this post!

Do you have the service turned on?

Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Information Services
Expand the "Web Sites" folder and click on "Default Web Site". Then, click the "Start Item" button in the top menu.

Yes it is turned on. I have tried uninstalling and installing a few times. Still the same results. I think the IE dosen't know where http://localhost is. How can I fix this?

Verify the location of the default site in IIS and make sure it exists and the files are there.

Try http://127.0.0.1 which is the IP localhost should resolve to.

If you have firewall or script blocking programs turned on, try turning them off for testing.

Thanx for all the help guy! But I figured out what is wrong.

In IE under tools > internet options > connections (tab) > Lan Settings
the box was checked for "automatically detect settings".
I unchecked that box and everything works!

I have had the same problem in XP and this is the solution to my issue!
