Proper way to set up IIS 5 Virtual Hosting with FTP and FTP Server Extensions?

Hi all,

I run IIS 5 on a Win2k Advanced Server machine with one IP and virtual web sites being hosted on that IP. For FTP access I have disabled the FTP IIS service and installed FileZilla FTP Server (this was the only way I could find out how to set up "virtual" ftp accounts for one IP).

I've had a couple customers complain that they could not use FrontPage to properly log on and make changes to their site. Going in via FTP works, but using FrontPage itself just doesn't work.

Will users not be able to log on via FrontPage if the IIS FTP service is disabled?

I wanted to know the correct way to initialize the FP server extensions. For example, when I configure the server extensions, do I need to create local machine groups? Does that even matter if I am using FileZilla for the FTP server?

Also, when I run the Check Server Extensions, do I want Frontpage to tighten security as much as possible for all Frontpage webs?

Sorry if these are very simple questions. Unfortunately I am mostly used to Apache web servers, so I've been stumbling along setting this IIS web server up properly.

All help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I don't know if FileZilla interferes with IIS, afaik Frontpage webs don't need or use the FTP part of IIS, I've used IIS locally with FP and the FTP service disabled without problems using XP. W2K IIS is very similar.

Make sure the FP extensions are properly installed on the web server. Memory tells me the FP extensions are automatically installed with W2K, but you may need a newer version for newer users. There are FPSE downloads available on the MS site. I don't know what the tighten security choice does, so I guess the online help will be the source of an answer. localhost/iishelp should open up the built-in IIS help, or you can find it in the MSDN library.

I just wanted to let everyone know I've solved my problem. I don't know if posting URL's inside my topic is prohibited, but I got my answer from my post here:

Thanks again!
