there could be any number of reasons...make sure the sql server you are trying to connect to allows remote connections, then find out what type of authentication it is using.

Can you just type in the IP Address in Sql Server box when you first start QA? Should it connect using only the ip address?

depends on how the server you are trying to connect to authenticates its users...Is it set to sql server authentication? or windows authentication?
There are many reasons why you wouldn't be able to do what you are trying to do. |

it says to connect using sql server authentication. Actually my hosted server administrator tells me to use enterprise server manager, register the server which i can do fine but when i try and connect i get an error.

In some cases you may need to create an alias using the client network utility on your computer.
SQL Server uses TCP port 1433, perhaps your server admin has changed to a different port. The admin can disable TCP connections, but it doesn't sound like that's the case here. |
