Well in honesty, I always use access as the data source and know that I am going to require knowledge of Microsoft SQL.
So in efect I need to create a database in the mdf format. But a little lost in setting all this up. Everything appears fine, but I am unsure how to get going with it now its up and running .So to answer your question. I need to create a database. Basically mess about and develop some skills hands on approach. Is there a gui? or is it supposed to be shell operated, either way how do I get to the action? Ps - did you ever get around to those picks for your management system M? I dont mean to push as I am sure you have plenty to do. But I would just like to know you have not forgotton .Cheers M Trev |

You could start here and follow the link to Documentation
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/e...l/sqlserver.asp You can create an Access Data Project to connect to your MSDE server. MSDE doesn't come with any client tools like SQL Server.

Ahhhh now I understand. Ok so the client tools are important so to speak.
I have an evaluation version of Microsoft SQL Server 2000, I understand that comes with client tools, and a gui as well. Thanks for the link Doug, I will have a good read through that. I also understand that mdf files are not as easy to setup by yourself on the server, is that true? So if I wanted to set something up I would have to contact my host in order to achieve this right? It is a pain having to contact the host all the time, can you not just upload the file into the database directory and connect to it yourself .Is this a tight security issue, Access is a simple job, upload and away you go.... making sure correct permissions are setup for the database directory, i.e read, write and execute. Any feedback Doug Cheers Trev |

SQL Server is not a file-based dbms like Access. You don't "set up" mdf files, you create databases within SQL Server and the dbms manages the actual file.
You can get the developer version of SQL Server from MS for around $50.00 US, which includes all the client tools like Enterprise Manager, DTS, Query Analyzer, etc. I recommend it for learning, MSDE is fine as a back-end data store but it's not a good learning environment. |
