Transparent Background
What is the right way to create an image with a transparent background.
I need to create a logo for a client which consists simply of the company name written in a particular typeface, however I need to overlay it different coloured backgrounds depending on the page viewed. Therefore I want to make the background transparent. However when I create the image the text always appears with rough edges, instead of nice a smooth which is the case if I create the image with a coloured background. I am using Photoshop CS3. Can anyone tell me the secret? |

I'm using Paint.NET for those tasks.. just choose the Magic Wand there, select
region to make transparent, click Delete button and Save As GIF image. all done. ![]() |

I'm pretty sure .gif is the only common format that supports transparency. But sorry, I don't know anything about Photoshop CS3. I know how to do it on GIMP though--if you need to get it done ASAP then you might want to look into downloading GIMP (which is totally free--trust me, I don't use anything unless there's no strings attached) and get the text finished with that and import into the rest of your logo on Photoshop from there. GIMP has great quality and transparency is easy to do.
But it's definately not professional software.... ![]() Last edited by smilingirl : February 15th, 2009 at 06:44 PM. Reason: clarity |

PNG format also supports transparency however IE6 browser is too primitive to support PNG so it's not widely used. but for non web applications, or for new sites that are targeted at IE7 or standard browsers it's perfectly valid to have transparent PNG's. Quote:
did you see when the thread was posted? if the OP needed it ASAP it's very very too late by now.. ![]() |

Hm, I guess I have seen the PNG around, I've just never used it myself and I don't know anything about it--interesting. Thanks for the info!
![]() And, hahah! Yeah...I guess I didn't see the date or even think to look. Well, I hope he got it done at least. Do you guys clean up the old threads every once in a while or do they usually just stick around? ![]() |
