Benefit of ASP

I posted this on the programming forum, but think it is better placed here perhaps.

I have used MSFP to build a personal HTML website with pics for family and MSFP features like nav bars, but that is honestly about it.

I now have lots of freetime and want to investigate other technologies. I have thought about having banners, links and trying to make some revenue from affiliates off my site as well as developing pure affiliate type sites.

My question is what will ASP allow me to do with regards to this that normal HTML with Frontpage won't?
Secondly, what is the difference between PHP and ASP.

If you want to flame, I have a thick skin
I'm pretty new as you can tell and figured I have to ask if I want to get some knowledge.

It will allow you to input and retrieve database from a database.
