really stupid question!!
Hi,
I apologise in advance for how stupid this question is, but basically i am doin some research.... if i will be using ASP, i will need to view it through a server, at home i use IIS. At work they have Microsoft exchange server...ok here is the stupid question, is IIS inbuilt into exchange server, or is exchange server a whole seperate server, or are there different servers inbuilt into exchange, as IIS is also microsoft based Oh and if it is a whole differnet server, will it make a difference that i have been testing a program using IIS, and at work they have exchange? I'd be really grateful if someone could get back to me Thanks in advance |

IIS (web server) is completely separate from Exchange Server (mail server). It will not matter that you are using IIS. In addition, IIS comes with SMTP server (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol Server). BTW - the question was not stupid.

Thanks for your reply and for making me feel less stupid
![]() But now i have another few questions, so if i were to run the program at work, a) would the fact that most of their products are microsoft mean that they have IIS? and if so where would it commonly be located? b) if IIS is on the computers, how would an intranet be set up, i.e would it contact the IIS thru a mail server on each individual machine? or would it connect to a main IIS? c) or would it be run through the exchange server? although doesnt sound like it makes sense. Thanks for your help ![]() sb |

A) If they are using at least Windows 2000, then they would have IIS, although it may not be installed. To see if it is installed try this Click "Start">"Settings">"Control Panel">"Administrative Tools" Look for "Internet Information Services" (IIS)
B) The Intranet would be setup on an internal network IP Address. Only accessible from within the company network. C) Exchange Server is an email server. IIS is a web server. They are completely separate and have no relation with each other. |

Excellent..thank you for your feedback,
All work station computers run xp professional, but i am not sure about the server computer. One last question is, will IIS need to be installed to the main server computer, or to each individual computer? Similarly will the intranet files be saved to the server computer, or will they need to be saved to each indivdual work station? I'm not quite sure which server the client will contact when you run an ASP based intranet...sorry if this sounds stupid Thanks so much for your help |

IIS needs to be installed on the main server (web server) only.
The files will be saved to the main server (web server) only. |
