Simple (?) Excel Question

I am using Excel 2000 and cannot figure out the following formula:

I want to type a part number into column 1 of workbook 1 and have it find that part number in column 3 of workbook 2 and then have it place the value in column 4, workbook 2 that is associated with the number in column 3 into column 2 of workbook 1.

For example, If I type a part number into column 1 of workbook 1, I want Excel to go to workbook 2 and look up this part number from column 3 and pull the description for that part number (the description is in column 4) and place it in column 2 of workbook 1.

I've tried several methods (VLOOKUP etc.) but can't seem to get the syntax right.

If you can help with a formula for this, I'de really appreciate it. If the explantion above is not clear, send me a note and I can send you a simplified attachement.

Thanks
