Question Simple networking help

I am an idiot. I have set a small home network successfully once with sharing files and printers enabled. When I could not get internet access I mistakenly re-setup the home network. Since then I found my daughter had turned off the modem but in the procees of "fixing" this problem I have lost the ability to share files.

So currently I am running a desktop hard wired to netgear hub and a lab top connected through a wireless net gear card. I can access the internet and email through either computer but they cannot "see" each other. The lap top says I may not have access to the network, while the desktop only lists itself as in the work group.

Both computers have the same domain name and work group names and each has a different computer name. I have run network set up many times trying a variety of things to no avail. I have also used the computers ability to return to a restore point but that was unsuccessful as well. I am running windows XP home edition on both computers with no firewall and norton antivirus protection.

Netgear support was non existent.
