In simple terms its is SEO (Search ENgine Optimization) & affilaite marketing is a kind of SEM (Search ENgine Marketing).
SEO is where you optimize the website by following numerous ethical seo techniques inorder to rank high in top search engines. This helps in driving organic traffic to the website for targeted keywords at no cost. Affiliate Marketing is a kind of tool to promote online businesses. In this process different websites are made the affiliate who refer user to the site and get share on the revenue. The general examples are Banner Ads, text ads, contextual ads and so on.
