Wink Please review www.thejevansband.co.uk

Like the title says. I would be very grateful. Indeed, it is what I joined this forum for.
Fate has made me manager of The J Evans Band, I have a duty to try and do my best!
The site was put together by an old friend, for a price, but he has now washed his hands of it...
Thanks to all in advance,
Michael Anders

Web Standards Man (myself) reviews and grades sites in 4 categories:
  • Code Validation [ 0 = None, 1 = Some attempt, 2 = Transitional, 3 = Strict, 4 = XHTML1.0 Strict / 1.1 ]
  • Aesthetics [ 0 = You can guess, 1 = FrontPage Themes, 5 = CSSZenGarden or better ]
  • Accessibility [ 0 = Negative usability (eg JavaScript generated menus), 1 = None, 2 = Alt text, etc.../ some attempt, 5 = True content/appearance separation and renders fine in Lynx and Jaws
  • Coding Practices [ -1 = Low-End WYSIWYG tools used obstienciously, 0 = No effort whatsoever, 1 = Excessive tables for layout, etc..., 5 = Semantic XHTML w/ CSS ]
so lets see how your site scores up:

Code Validation:

You appear to be using <framesets>, this is bad practice and prevents users from bookmarking your site properly. But overlooking this:

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=h...utomatically%29

You're using the wrong doctype for a frameset.

HTML validator throws up 3 errors when Doctype is overrridden: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=h...L+4.01+Frameset

but your site appears to be hand-coded and looks like a good beginner job

As for the content itself

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=h...L+4.01+Frameset

Throws up 8 errors, not bad... they appear to be due to incorrect nesting, correct this and it should be fine

You get 2/4

Aesthetics:

You've got good colour (or lack of) coordination... but white on black can be hard to read on TFT/LCD screens, especilly when using 'thin' fonts like Arial.

The top menu looks okay... but it could do with filling the entire top of the screen

You get 3/5

Accessibility:

You've alt="" text'ed your nav images, thats a plus, it seems to be semi-accessible with Lynx, but I must chastisise your decision to use frames, as this does seriously hamper accessibility

Your use of tables for layout, especilly when it was unncessacery does mean you take a hit

You get 2/5

Coding Practices

The pattern of code gives me the impression you use Dreamweaver's "Design View" for the majority of the work, before using Code View to make a few changes

You did alt your images, which, as I said earlier, is agood

You used tables, however... this is never good coding/dev practice

Your code is (relativly speaking, compared to the other horrors I've seen today) clean-cut and easy to navigate

You get 3/5 (and I'm being generous)

Total Score: 10/19

Thumbs up Please review www.thejevansband.co.uk

Thanks D00D, and excuse my late response. You're clearly a man who knows his stuff and I'm passing the URL of your review on to the website creator. I appreciate your effort...
