Too many Lurkers not enough Responders
Hi - I discovered this website about a month ago and was VERY excited with the breadth and diversity of the topics. And I thought I had found mecca. I still think this site has great potential - BUT - why so few responders? Take this "Site Review" section for example. There are some sites with 1 responder and 100 or even 200 lurkers. Maybe some of these people don't respond because they undervalue their own expertise or advice. In any case, I urge you all to make an extra effort to respond. That old truism about only getting out what you put in really, really applies to this site. This site can be a great one if we all do our part to make it so.

Try putting a post in the coding sections showing that you have researched your topic and clearly described your problem in concise terms, including code samples for extra clarity, and see how many responses you get, and to what extremes the forum members will go to help you out

Selwonk - I was referring specifically to the site review section. I was one of the lucky ones - I actually had 2 people review my site. I understand that most people don't follow the posting hints very closely, and of course they have only themselves to blame. But some people do follow the posting hints and still get little action.
Now, about the coding. I've had two coding problems in the last 3 weeks I've posted on these forums. In both cases, I followed the posting suggestions to the best of my ability, put actual snippets of code in when possible, and received responses from Memnoch only. I tried doing what he said, couldn't get it to work, came back, said so, and got no further responses. I don't expect the moderators to be able to handle each and every request. It's better to have members doing it. Here's a rule of thumb people could follow, that would work mathematically: Every time someone responds to your post, make a point of finding one other post on the forums that you are qualified to respond to, and respond to it. If you always pay back what you take out the account will never get overdrawn. |

I joined in June and have posted two, maybe three threads. Check out how many posts I have made in this time. It's very rare to see a coding post go unanswered...

"Post answered" isn't the same thing as "problem solved".
