I don't even want to think this capability exists.

Unfortuneately it does

It's scary!
I was using program I won't divulge the name of but when I was experimenting around with it, I was able to rename the name of a remote machine on the network. Now it was not a machine on the world wide web it was a machine on our WAN.

I didn't think it was possible, but I went and inspected it physically and it did change it. It won't be long before that becomes accessable to a greater degeree.

Maybe that's not significant to the question because I guess there are programs that are supposed to be able to do it on your LAN/WAN. In that case Never Mind.....

I (or one of the IT staff here) can do this to almost any machine on our wan because I have admin rights over the network, so I have admin rights to any of the machines also.
But, the ability to do this without those rights are scary. This could probably be done to winME and below because of how those operating systems handle security.

Back from the boonies

I've been at the farm all week; just catching up on mail and some of the forums. The software that allowed me to rename the computer was a third party gadget I found on the web, and I was NOT logged in as administrator at that time. (very scary --- I remember commenting on that with something like HOLY S%^^%$$$%%TTT Look at what just happened here! )
I would give the general information out but, the sys admin in me says I can't because there are too many nefarious people out there that would like to play havoc with that kind of power.

There are ways to defeat the little program.... SECURITY!!! and possibly a migration to a different OS more secure OS.

I didn't have any *nix boxes to mess with so I don't know what it would have done. But I'm almost certain I would not have been allowed to change anything there.

Regards
