connecting external device using Vb

hi

I work with the Health & exercise Department and i have been asked to do a project in which i have to measure a boxers response time to some kind of stimulus. How can i do this using VB. I have to connect some kind of sensor or switch to the punching bag and whenever it is punched
I have to calculate the time between the punch and the stimulus.

WHAT EXTERNAL DEVICE CAN I USE
HOW CAN I CONNECT IT AND WHAT IS THE CODE TO MAKE IT WORK
