Hey all, just some stupid questions i need to ask before i buy or get myself into trouble. i see that you all highly recommend Dreamweaver vs frontpage. i will take your advise, cuz you all have more experience than i do. if i buy DreamWeaver MX 2004, that will give me all the beginner tutorials correct? whats the difference between the regular "english" version and the "Academic" version and the "education" version. DreamWeaver MX 2004 is the latest version correct and i will not need any upgrade cd's or what not?got any place to buy for cheaper than $399? i found some on amazon for like $240 but i am worried i may not get what i want.
just looking for some guidence/help from somebody more knowledgeable then myself. thanks alot hack_programr ![]() |

Dreamweaver MX is good but is now outdated and may not be the best way to go, a simple wysiwyg would be the best option.
What i mean by that is Dreamweavers way of building web pages is in tables and it does this well but now, the correct way to build websites is using layers and CSS, which although dreamweaver does it, it does tables much better. You can download HTML editors from www.downloads.com for free, which will save you money and get you greating your own code and dreamweavers, I suggest you download a couple of html editors off the web site mentions, download the trial version of dreamweaver from macromedia.com and make a dession for yourself. Dreamweavers different versions related to what you are licensed to do with them, if you want to put your sites online for ppl to ysee then you will need the full version, the student one is for students to do web design at uni, but they are not supposed to upload sites for public use, but you will need proof of your situation to purchas them as they are. dreamweaver does have tutorials but there are plenty of them else where such as www.w3schools.com and www.htmlgoodies.com, but there are loads. Hope that helps sorry if it doesn't

any html WYSIWYG editor, that is free would be a good place to start, I would recommend downloading anyone, then use it to build a few bits and peaces, that you have picked up in the tutorials on www.w3schools.com they dont take long and give you essential info, and much more.
I dont really know any names sorry, if you are wanting to more complex stuff i recommend you do the tutorails in asp or php, this will allow you to link to databases, send email and upload stuff, but takes a bit more time to learn and put together, dreamweaver has the ability to write the code for you, but you really need to know some of what it is writing before you payout a lot of money you can do for nothing. and in that case downlaod the trial version and give it a go, but leanr the basics first cos you only get 30 days. And yes html editors is what u are after. Good luck |

i disagree.. DM makes it easier for people to be lazy, but the dependance is allll their own.
agreed though that you have to know how to watch the code as it builds or it will do dumb stuff you didnt ask it to. |

hi plasma800
don't get me wrong plasma, dreamweaver is one of the best tools out there, but cos the easy way out is always there on dreamweaver, its to tempting, my main issue with dreamweaver is that it now focuses to much on layout with table and doesn't look at take into web standards enought. I would like to point out, that web standards although have been out for a while, I feel have only taken hold in the last 12-24 months, and I would expect that macromedia will bring it upto date in there next version. Don't get me wrong its a great tool, and does the job, but needs to be tambed to get the best out if |

Of course, I'm the one who said to get VisualStudio.
Because unlike Dreamweaver: a) Fully code-centric environment b) The academic version is cheaper than Dreamweaver MX's academic edition c) The academic edition doesn't have an EULA that prevents you from producing commerical products d) Plus you get VB/C#/C++/J# IDEs, compilers, and debuggers to boot ![]() |

Tis true!
Man even I haven't figured out how to dump tables all together! I've done some reading on it, but ... it just takes time. |

The last time I checked there was no version of VS available for Mac. Has this changed? I've used Dreamweaver for years, and even Frontpage when I had to. I rarely use the WYSIWYG mode, but find it useful when editing text that can sometimes be difficult to locate when it is buried in a page of code...especially if it's someone else's code! I've had some experience with BBEdit as well, and would recommend it to anyone.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but I suppose I could get Virtual PC and run Visual Studio on that! |
