There are several ways to begin in web design, macromedia fireworks is a graphic design package used to create graphics, for web design itself a package such as Front Page or Dreamweaver is best.

There are plenty of tutorials around and you should start there.

Any info just ask

mate the best way to get inspiration is still the old school way go grab a pen and paper and draw, draw screens play with things that will start flowing through your mind. dont use macromedia or any other tool... real web designers use a graphics application to draw, notepad to code and SKILL to put it all together.

BTW i was born in Dundee

I don't know anything about Fireworks, but it's included in the Macromedia Studio MX that I got. I originally opened Dreamweaver for a HTML coding tool (like Notepad) where I could easily see the results in the same application. Slowly but surely, I use it more for what it's intended, but not even close to it's capability.
I'm very incapable when it comes to design, colors and layout, but good at "chopping it up" and making it work. I found that there are plenty of sites that offer free templates that you can download and edit in Dreamweaver (or others) to fit your needs. I get a much more professional looking site that way, and it's functionality is done on my end.
As stated by the post above, online tutorials have helped a lot when it comes to trying to learn something new.
Good Luck

i would steer clear of using Frontpage - you won't really learn anything and it's so sloppy. If you're going to use an editor Dreamweaver is better, but the best thing to do is open up notepad, do a google search for web design tutorials and go from there.

Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and an FTP client are all you need to start a basic site. Don't use FrontPage or FrontPage Express for the love of God.

This truly is all you need to start.

I recommend Dreamweaver to anyone, because you can actually learn how to code if you use the split screen view option where you see both the layout and code. A great way to learn in my opinion.

And if at all possible, learn the HTML (or now it should be XHTML) code itself. Don't rely on a WYSIWYG application to do it all for you becuase there are some things that make it so you HAVE to know the code in order to accomplish your goal. Hand coding is a disappearing "art" but it should be the first thing you learn. After that, speed up your development with a WYSIWYG application.

As mentioned above learn HTML, CSS. If possible can do the coding by hand (Note Tab Pro) is a good program. For graphics, use Jasc Paintshop Pro for graphics and Photoshop for Photos/detailed images and as for learning, look at the source code of sites that you like and see how it all comes together. Good Luck

Exclamation DreamWeawer

You'd better start with macromedia DreamWeawer and go through all the lessons and tutorials. It will help you to start.
Than you will be able to search for more advanced info on the web.
