Web layout standard?

I would like to know what standard of web page layout in terms of body width in these days? Do we still have to make it fits nicely on an 800×600 resolution screen? Most people are having wider monitor screens? Any suggestions?

Thanks

IMO it depends on your market audience, if your audience is the western world then 1024 is the min IMO and if your aiming at third world, charity, or hand me downs then 800 x 600 is the way to stay.

In my opinion if you can get away with been screen size, then go for it I think it offers a better web site, much easier to lay things out, much more space, all my sites are now 1024 cos I think they look good.

On my site less than 3% use 800 x 600 more target audience iare people with a few quid to space and generally are very computer literate.

I pretty much design for 1024 width these days... I have only recieved one complaint from a customer in 2 years since moving in that direction.

Depending on the site, where possible, I will design things to "rubber band" and fit the monitor width.
