CMD, Task Manager, Regedit not working?

So i've scanned these forums a great many times for help and have finally decided to post and seek help personally from you guys here, heres my problem.

Recently the Task manager, Command Prompt, and Regedit are unavailable on my Computer (using XP Home service pack 2). I don't know, nor do i have any idea what could have caused it.

Task manager only works within the first few seconds on my computer being on. After those few seconds i get a Windows crash report window popping up telling me 'ab.exe' has encountered a problem and must close. I've searched into ab.exe with no outcome. After this however, Task manager refuses to open up. No flash of the window, no error message, and no beep. It just refuses to open.

Regedit when started via "Run" pops up a Command prompt-like window with the title: C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.com as the window title. Inside the cmd window is nothing but the blinking bottom cursor waiting for input. Try to type something and nothing happens. It stays like this, moving nowhere. When i click the 'X' atop the page it hesitates a brief second and gives me the "Windows cannot end this program..." message with the button options "End Program" and 'Cancel". End now and the window immediately closes.

Heres the curious part dealing with the Command prompt itself. When starting the Command prompt from run it gives the same window and message as Regedit did, only this time the title address is "C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.com. Same end program message. However if i start it up through the start menu (Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt) i get a different error message telling me that "Another program is already using this program" with the only option of "Ok". This also happens when i put in 'cmd.exe' in "Run" instead of just cmd.

To try and fix this i have:
Run anti-spyware programs (XCleaner, Spybot - Search and destroy, with SpywareBlaster also running). In addition to clearing the 'Temp' folder, running Disc checks and defrag.

So... anyone have any idea whats causing this and any idea on how to fix it? I'm at a complete loss and although it appears to be doing nothing to my system (yet). It is still annoying and a bit worrysome.

Thanks!

Download HijackThis and post the report here... it sounds like you have a really nasty piece of malware there.

Also, go to our sister forum, Dev Shed and look through their Anti-virus Forum for clues...

Yeah, i downloaded AVG and it found a few things that shouldn't have been there. Now that its been removed Task manager works now more than it used to! Thankfully! However with the occasional Task manager issue i now have a severely slowed down computer. Games have incredibly reduced FPS and programs take their sweet time starting up. Any ideas?
