Question DELL USB 2.0 Controller

Hello,
I just bought a DELL Precision Workstation 340 (slimline PC) from a friend of mine a few weeks ago and I'm having issues updating the Intel@ USB controller drivers to 2.0. The system has a 2.0 GHZ processor and a gig of ram and it came with XP Pro. When I turn my external CD drive on, I get the message saying that the device can perform faster if plugged into a high speed USB 2.0 port. Having seen this message before on DELL PCs, I went to device manager and used ol' trustworthy Microsoft Update to hopefully find my drivers, with no success. You Surprised there cuz I'm not? I checked the product page,

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=WRK_PNT_P4_340&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

and I could not seem to find what I was looking for. My resource CD only contains the chipset driver update for SP1 and won't install to SP2 which I currently have installed. Any help would be greatly appreciated at this point. I think I'm all GOOGLED OUT and I'd hate to have to uninstall the service pack!!

Thanks in advance.

DELL USB 2.0 Controller

the message:

"the device can perform faster if plugged into a high speed USB 2.0 port"

is displayed when the USB sockets on the desktop are USB 1.1 sockets.

so trying to install USB 2.0 drivers is a waste of time and won't do anything.

if you want USB 2.0 ports you have to buy a PCI card that has USB 2.0 ports.

FIXED IT!!!!! It took the long way though unfortunately. I wound up removing service pack 2 and running the chipset driver update utility that came with the resource CD I mentioned above. The EXE file would not install over SP2 I know it had USB 2.0 controllers installed. My friend initially bought the PC back in 2003 BRAND NEW and if my memory serves me correctly the USB 2.0 specification was released in April 2000 or 2001. I've seen this issue many times with DELL PCs. I've just never had to go through this much trouble to fix the issue before. I guess my intent with this post was to hopefully find someone who knew how to get that driver installed over SP2. Lessons learned: Don't always trust Microsoft Update to find all your drivers for you like they say and run your resource disks before installing any service packs to the machine.

Thanks Anyway

Very true, It has been an ongoing issue with big companies like MS and Dell Inc. I fail to understand that why these big shots don't provided the upgraded versions of computer peripherals or softwares to the new customer.
when Dell knows that USB 1.1 sockets are slow why they don't provide with USB 2.0 sockets in the first place. how come a newbie be aware of these small and important things while buying a PC?
